The autologous stem cell process has began for our family! Mom and Dad got checked into their “new home” for the duration of the stem cell extraction. They will move into an apartment in Nashville when they venture into the next phase of this process. For now they are staying at a place sponsored by the American Cancer Society, it is free housing for cancer patients. It has been a huge blessing for our family and I’m sure many others as well, it is nice to have any burdens removed in the face of cancer! They are very supportive, they have different volunteer groups bring dinner in to the residents each evening. As a family that bases all of our meetings around what we are going to eat, this has been a fun part for my parents. For those of you that know them, you know how much they love to interact and share everything they know with others…and then some;)
Also, autologous is a fancy way of saying that they are using his own stem cells. This in my opinion carries a lot less risk to my Dad.
They began yesterday by getting his central line in, this will be utilized during this whole process. The first major use for it is to extract the stem cells from his body. Sometimes I often wonder where all of the millions of dollars go that is collected every year for cancer research, I can see through this process that we are embarking on with Vandy that it has gone to very good use in this arena. My Dad is one of the oldest people to have a stem cell transplant at Vanderbilt, we are believing by faith that his cancer will be healed through this process. Back to the central line, it was inserted yesterday and it has 3 “udders” connected to it. Each one is very important to complete this process, in other words all 3 have to be working. They were able to get blood return on 2 out of 3 of them today, this poses a small set back. They will have to go back in tomorrow and replace or repair the current line, even though that is not ideal we want everything to be working perfectly!
So, pray for them as we all embark on this journey together! Pray that the udders on the central line are all in perfect working order, pray for my sweet momma, his caretaker! There will be many trials and victories in the days ahead and we will give glory to God for each one!
I will update every few days, so stay tuned…..
