By definition, obedience means compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another’s authority.
I think for the most part, we all try to be pretty obedient people by this definition. We abide by the law, we follow orders, submit to another’s authority? Wait, what? Do you submit to authority easily? That can sometimes be hard, especially when it requires us doing something we really don’t want to.
Even, some good things, but we still just plainly don’t want to do them. Can you relate? Have you ever been so caught up in a situation that you kind of lose yourself? It’s like we get lost and start to forget why we began at all. We however must remain obedient, our faith and relationships depend on it. We must live a life of obedience to God, He has an ultimate plan for each of us. Are you living yours out in obedience or are you kind of stubborn?
I can relate to stubborn, as I’ve said here before I have at times in life been very selfish. Only seeing things my way and for my benefit. I was not walking in obedience to anyone, actually quite the opposite. Trying to defy all odds, it was a work out. However, true obedience is always being ready and willing to do what it takes. It’s taking self out of the equation and being a willing vessel.
True obedience will change your life, it is required of us. The Bible has much to say about being obedient, one verse that stuck out to me today stated that by being obedient we help others in doing the same, on the other side of that if we are not we are leading them down the wrong path. (Romans 5:19) There is much at stake in our being obedient, we can help make things better or make them worse.
I would much rather steer someone in the right direction than be guilty of leading them down the wrong path. Wouldn’t you? It’s a choice we make everyday, I don’t get it right every time. I try my best, and sometimes I don’t try at all. Life is busy and hard at times and we sometimes just don’t want to do what we know is right. That is when you have to dig deep and lean on God and His plan, trust like you never have before in Him. Being obedient feels so good! It is actually required of us as Christians, another verse that caught my eye was 2 John 1:6 “And this is love; that we walk in obedience to His commands. As you have heard from the beginning, His command is that you walk in love.” It always comes back to love!
It’s not really all that hard, if we follow His commandments and LOVE! All things are centered around love, it is simply required of us to ALL people. Even the people who make it extremely difficult to love them. We can each take the first step to obedience today by simply loving our neighbor. That might physically mean your neighbor, co-workers, family members; everyone should really be included. I’ve said it before but that is what we are called to do, love and serve.
Choose this day who you will serve, will you submit to God’s will or will you keep pushing your own agenda? Go for peace, choose obedience.
Obedience for me was getting up at 4am to enjoy some quiet time before my busy day. Trust me, I fought it, so glad I chose to just do it. Obedience is simple really, listen to God’s nudging on your heart today and try His plan, what do you have to lose?
If your not sure where to start, start small. Be obedient in little ways, that is sometimes the most important. It may be as simple as a kind gesture for someone struggling, start by trying to build someone up. Ask God, if you listen and be still, He will show you. It will look different for everyone, we’re all on our own mission. Each one of us holding an important role in the kingdom of God.
