There are so many things that happen in this life that we simply can’t explain and don’t understand. Injustice is all around us, people being treated unfairly, wrongfully accused good people, cancer, human trafficking, drug addiction, child abuse, ISIS; sadly I could go on and on. These just happen to be the ones that are currently taking up a lot of space in my mind right now.
What can we possibly do to combat these times? What if we all looked at these issues to see how we could help, I know I used to feel so helpless and sometimes I still do. However, I have a small solution that can make a huge impact.
There is a hole in our hearts that only He can fill, so many times we try to fill it with other things. Some of the worst are hatred, which leads to horrible acts on innocent lives. Money, which causes people to do things that I can’t even fathom, putting dollar signs on innocent children for the pleasure of sickos. Drugs, I think sadly we all have been affected by this sad epidemic.
However, we have a full proof solution, so why isn’t it being used to its fullest capacity. That is the part that is up to us, we can’t sit back and say that this problem is too big. That is simply not going to work anymore, we have to get active and make a move.
My father-n-law had a bad time with addiction, for a time in life it cost him everything. It was very sad to watch, however through the grace of God, he is one of the lucky ones that survived. Sobriety requires a relationship with God, it is a must, the part that used to be filled with drugs gets replaced with a real relationship with Jesus. He brings peace to addicts, He brings clarity and fulfills the spaces in our lives that nothing else can satisfy.
When we did our first prison ministry, we were terrified. We had no idea what to expect, it was eye opening. One thing that I will never forget, is a man serving a life sentence told me that he was grateful for prison because if he would have stayed on the streets, he would have busted the gates of hell wide open. He was not complete until he filled the hole in his heart with Jesus. We witnessed many cool things in there that changed my life forever. God is on the move, even in the darkest places. My Mom has made this her platform, reaching the lost in prison greatly affects their outcome on the outside. It is proven that if prisoners gain a real relationship with Christ on the inside, their chance of returning to prison is greatly decreased, not sure if you are aware that most people who leave prison, sadly return.
Then there are some things that we don’t have a rational explanation for, like cancer. It is not partial, it affects every family in one way or another. It is frustrating and scary, I am however so thankful for the great strides forward in medicine. They are literally saving my Dad’s life, cancer struck us from behind like it does most people. Another time, when Jesus is the key, His faith and love are most needed in our hardest times. We have to draw our strength from Him in times like these. I am finding that when life was fair and going my way, I was filling my hole in my heart with what ever I wanted. I had to be broken to realize how much I really needed Jesus. Don’t wait for that to happen to you, don’t have to go to the trenches to find Jesus, chase after Him today right where you are. I resisted a real relationship with God for a long time, and by real, I mean just that. Real by definition means not imitation or artificial, genuine. You draw near to God and he draws near to you. It is required in this life, it is not optional. If you view it this way, why do you? Be honest with your self, your life literally depends on it.
As we stare down the face of a wrongful conviction, we have to draw on Jesus now more than ever. We won’t understand it like we don’t understand a cancer diagnosis, however we will hold our heads high knowing that we know the truth and so does God. What else really matters, God will use this time as He has every other trial, for His glory!
We should all lean on God’s promises and words to face any trial that we encounter, here are a few that I personally love.
James 1:2-5, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything”
Romans 5:3-5, ” Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character, and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given us.”
Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
