Humble has been a word on my heart and swirling heavy in my mind over the last few weeks. It comes to mind in every situation, I am certainly seeing the reason for this is because this is an area of my life that needs major work.
According to the dictionary, humble means having or showing a modest or low estimate of one’s own importance. However, throughout the Bible I think it takes on more of a meaning than that. Humbleness feels more like a cornerstone to live life off of, we need to understand what God means when He says we should be humble. The topic of being humble is used in the Bible in 72 different verses. A couple that really stuck out to me were:
- James 4:6, But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
- And then in 2 Chronicles 7:14, God says, “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and will heal their land.”
- And lastly in Proverbs 11:2, the Bible says, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”
God honors and adores humility! If this is a characteristic that God is looking for in each of us then it should be something that we are daily working at! So, how do you do it on a regular basis?
Last night at dinner I asked our boys what it meant to be humble? They both said “not to brag.” And to a degree they are right, however it goes much deeper than that. It goes straight to the heart, we must shape our hearts in a way that we aren’t saying it or bragging because it is simply not in our hearts. So, how do we shape our hearts in this way? We start by wiping pride out! Ouch! That is hard, but necessary.
C.S. Lewis, states that …it is pride which has been the chief cause of misery in every nation and family since the world began. Wow! Think back to any situation or conflict that you have been engaged in, was pride a factor? Umm, yes! In almost every situation that comes to mind for me I see pride at work. It plays a part in family drama, it is a huge factor among friends, coworkers, etc; pride surfaces everywhere. It is first brought up in the Bible when Satan tempted Eve, it is the oldest trick in the book (literally?)!
Pride vs. Humility
We can overcome this, just what if we each started with ourselves! What if we could lay our pride down and humble ourselves. What if we always put others before ourselves? What if we never had to get our way? What if we wanted God to have His way every time?
God wants to be on display everyday of our lives! What better way can we use to point people to Him than by how we each live our lives. What if we each lived a life that showed real humility. What if we didn’t have to be patted on the back for our good deeds, what if God got all of the glory for the goodness we spread. It’s a big idea and I am going to do my best to live it out daily.
I’m going to work on stomping out pride in my life, the definition of “proud” states this, having or showing a high or excessively high opinion of oneself or one’s importance. As I was looking up the definition of pride, it reminded me that a pack of lions is referred to as a pride. Are you prowling around like a lion pride waiting to devour whatever comes in your path that looks appetizing and easily discouraged? Or are you there to love and nurture whatever responsibilities come your direction? Think about it!
Being “proud” in this context just sounds terrible, I don’t want to exude that trait at all. I don’t want anyone to think of me as better than anyone else, and I definitely don’t want them to think that I think of myself as better than them. We are all created equal, like it or not! Yes, some make bad choices and take rough paths, however those people need our prayers, not our pride. For we were all there at one time, since none of us our perfect! Remember what Proverbs said, pride brings disgrace and humility brings wisdom. Which would you rather bring about? Disgrace or wisdom?
What about 2 Chronicles, if we will humble ourselves then He will forgive our sin and heal our land. That sounds nice! What do you want out of life?
I hope you’ll chew on this thought a bit, look it up for yourself. Find out what it means and looks like for you. How can you be more humble in your daily life?
What do you need to do and most importantly what do you need to stop doing?
Let’s all point others to Christ by the way we live! Let’s be a real people who walk humbly with our God!
What does humility vs. Pride look like in your life?
Will you begin shaping your life in the image of God or will you continue on your own path?
I would love to hear your feedback on humility…I am really studying and learning about this and would love to hear how you practice humility?
God Bless! -nat
