How do you view sacrifice? What comes to mind?
Do you think if an alter with an animal on it?
Do you think of baseball sacrifices?
Do you think of thinking more of others than yourself?
The dictionary says a sacrifice is an act of offering to a deity (a supreme being) something precious (of great value).
This message has been heavy on my heart lately for many reasons. The first is the sacrifice made for freedom, if I’m being honest I never really got it. Like for example, my nephew Zac, he is in the US Navy. He is doing something grand, something bigger than himself. While, he chose this path and is excelling. He is also sacrificing a great deal, time is what comes to mind for me today. He is a full day away from me, $2k plan ride away; that is far away in my book. Thanksgiving, Christmas, his birthday, Easter, soon to be his college graduation are coming and going and while he may celebrate in Italy, it is not the same. He didn’t get to hear his birthday song sang ‘Collins’ style, actually that may have been on purpose. ? He is sacrificing something for you and me. It is a great thing but it is also a hard thing. We do need freedom, their are thousands of others doing the same as him. Say, thank you to them when you can.
As a parent, we sacrifice many things for our kids. We give them all we can to help put them on a solid foundation. We give of our all; time, money and sanity (ha, but sometimes).
We sacrifice for our family, we sacrifice for our jobs, but what do you sacrifice for God?
Notice, He fell in at the end of my list. That is sometimes where His place in our lives rest, we get to Him when we have everything else done. We keep God for last because we know that He will be there whenever we need Him. However, He should be the first thing on our list. He must! It makes all of the other sacrifices that we must make daily make so much more sense.
We can’t really give of ourselves as we should if we are not adequately equipped. We can try to do it out of our own strengths but simply can’t give our best without help from God.
As Cobe was complaining of something in life not being fair, I was reminded that we should always want better for others before ourselves. That is a hard truth. And, as I was sharing this with him, I realized that I don’t always model this for my kids. Dang it, once again I am reminded that I must live a life of example that points them away from me and toward their heavenly Father.
I get caught up in life and fall short, we all do. I want to encourage you today, to take a look around. What can you sacrifice for someone else today? What can you do for someone else that puts their best interest above yours?
What action can you do today that takes the focus off of you and points someone directly to Jesus? After all, isn’t that what being a Christian should look like?
I pray you have a blessed weekend and that you will look to God first and let Him show you what you can do for Him by sacrificing for others to further His kingdom here on Earth! ✌
So, get out there a take a sacrifice bunt today so someone else can advance! ⚾
